Books of the Month: February 2013

Here are our favorite books from February.  There are really no surprises when it comes to Sam's favorites this month.  We've been introducing him to several classics and, predictably, they have not disappointed.

Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton
Sam FINALLY decided he likes Sandra Boynton!
And I am thrilled because her books are adorable.

Brown Bear. Brown Bear, What Do You See?
by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle

Sam brings me this board book and says "bown boooooor"
and then crawls up into my lap and wants to read it
over and over and over and over....

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
We read this EVERY night before bed.

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
I get a little dramatic when we read this, and it
makes Sam giggle like crazy.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
Well.  Of course.

Sisterchicks On The Loose by Robin Jones Gunn
I borrowed this from a friend and read it on the plane
to and from Portland.  It's simple and fairly brainless, but
pieces of the story have really stuck with me.  If
you like Christian fiction give this a try.  It's the first
in a series, and supposedly the second book is even better.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
I cannot put my reaction to this book into words.
I am haunted by it.  In a good way.  Read it.  Soon.

Tomorrow we'll be making a trip to the library and finding some new books for the March list.  Happy reading!

A Few First Words

Sam has been talking for several months, but recently he's really kicked it up a notch.  He'll repeat just about anything if he's in the mood to talk.  Today I noticed that a page in his My First Counting Book had four of his favorite things all on one page:  flowers, fish, cars, and birds.  So I grabbed the camera.

Books of the Month: January 2013

Books are an important part of our family.  Aaron and I love to read, and we've read to Sam from the day he popped out into this world.  Actually, come to think of it, we even read to him before he was born!  Here are our favorite books that we discovered this month.

Freight Train by Donald Crews
Sam loves the colors and simplicity of this book.  We borrowed it from the library and ended up buying a board book for him because the day we took it back to the library he cried.  I think he also loves the fact that Daddy does some pretty impressive sound effects!

Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw
This was another one that we purchased after finding it at the library.  The illustrations are hysterical, and the story is simple and quick.

We Are In A Book by Mo Willems
If you haven't read Elephant and Piggie yet you are really missing out.  This one is one of our favorites.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
Not nearly as good as the original Percy Jackson series, but still an enjoyable easy read.

The Ranger's Apprentice Series by John Flanagan
We actually discovered these books last fall, but since Aaron just finished the series this month it seemed appropriate.

Captivating / Wild At Heart by John & Stasi Eldredge
Aaron and I read these books together.  We both were extremely touched and convicted by the insight the authors offer.

What did you read this month that blew your hair back?

Bookworm

It looks like we might have a tiny little bookworm on our hands!  Every night before bed we read to Sam - and usually throughout the day, too - so he has figured out where the books are.  Now when he wants to read he  leans toward the bookshelf or the corner where he knows there is a pile of books.  This one seems to be his current favorite.
